Another leak and more evidence of Al-Sisi scrambling for support

February 5, 2014 at 2:12 am

Another leaked video broadcast by Rassd media network shows coup leader General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi urging journalists and intellectuals to launch a media campaign calling for the introduction of a law to make his position as Defence Minister immune from prosecution. He also wanted to make sure that he would be able to return to his post in the event that he failed to become the president of Egypt.

Al-Sisi made his statements during an interview on camera with Yasser Rizk, the editor of Al Masry Al Youm newspaper. The article was published without Al-Sisi’s controversial statements; the newspaper is known to be loyal to the Egyptian military.

The video reveals Al-Sisi’s ambition to take power in Egypt, which runs counter to his claims at the time of the coup that he was there to protect democracy and protect the country from dictatorship. It also shows his attempt to create legal protection for him should his ambition to tighten his grip on the army and state institutions fail.

Earlier leaks showed Al-Sisi saying that he wanted to control the media and strengthen the reach of the army and its ideology. He made the comments during a meeting of military officers to look at re-instating the “red lines” which, he claimed, the January 25 Revolution had destroyed.
