Tawakkol Karman: Egypt's opposition leaders resorted to military coup after the people rejected them

Yemeni activist and Nobel Prize Laureate Tawakkol Karman has described the events in Egypt since 30 June as a complete military coup to overthrow the will of the Egyptian people that was expressed by the January revolution. Furthermore, she believes the coup is a cover up for the military’s corruption that has ruled Egypt for the past 60 years.

Karman said in an exclusive interview with the BBC that she supported the demonstrations on 30 June but she did not know that General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and the Egyptian army would later suppress Egyptians’ demands.

She also denied the coup’s allegations that 33 million Egyptians had protested in Tahrir Square to oust the country’s legitimate President Dr. Mohamed Morsi, saying: “If the alleged numbers who protested to oust Morsi were true,” then this level of opposition would also have been reflected in the results of the previous elections for the Shura Council and the presidency.

Kerman said that Egypt’s opposition leaders, who failed to assume power by elections and referendums, had instead resorted to the military to eliminate those Egyptians who expressed their will through the ballot box, which produced a government led by an elected civilian President whose legitimacy they should have respected.
