A senior Israeli Defence Ministry official has praised Egypt’s latest military operation against armed groups in the Sinai.

After the coup that ousted former President Mohammed Morsi, the Egyptian army has been cracking down on the restive population in Sinai.

On Sunday, Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth quoted Amos Gilad, who is Director of the Political-Military Affairs Bureau at the Israeli Defence Ministry, as saying, “For the first time, we see a determined struggle against terrorism in Egypt’s Sinai, unrelated to the interests of Israel. The operation of the Egyptians is impressive.”

During a speech at the Interdisciplinary Centre Herzliya, Gilad also remarked: “The Egyptians now recognize Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007, as a threat and we enjoy this deterrence.”
