Senior African delegation visits Morsi

February 8, 2014 at 2:48 am

A delegation of senior African officials headed by former Mali president Alpha Oumar Konaré has met the ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi at the secret location where he is being detained, Egypt’s Middle East news agency said on Wednesday morning.

No details were reported about the meeting, which lasted for about an hour.

A number of the delegation members will hold a press conference after meeting Arab League officials later on today. The situation in Egypt is on the agenda for the meeting.

The visit of the African delegation to Morsi is the second by internationals since he was removed by General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi on July 3. The first was made by EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Tuesday.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union suspended Egypt’s membership following the military coup which cancelled the constitution and removed the freely-elected president.
