HRW Director: UN should act more 'proactively' towards the humanitarian crisis in Syria

February 9, 2014 at 4:38 pm

Executive Director of Human Rights Watch Kenneth Roth condemned the “starvation policy” adopted by the Syrian regime against civilians.

In statements to Andolu news agency in New York, Roth said “the Assad regime is using civilians as a war tool by starving them”, which constitutes “a violation of human rights and amounts to a war crime”.

The Security Council called many times for delivering humanitatian aid to civilians in Syria, but Russia always blocked a resolution in this respect, Roth added.

Furthermore, Roth condemned the stance of the internaitonal community -particularly the UN- towards the Syrian crisis, dismissing it as “insufficient”. He expressed disappointment over the stance of Vallery Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, who according to Roth did not insist on delivering aid to Syria, urging her to be more “proactive” and to draw the world’s attention to the humanitarian crisis in Syria.
