The ministry of the interior in the Hamas-led government of the Gaza Strip has announced the release of seven detainees who were being held on security charges. All seven of the men released are members of Fatah.

Ibrahim Salah, the Director of the Media Office at the ministry, expressed his hope that the leadership of Fatah will reciprocate with similar moves in the occupied West Bank.

The detainees were released as part of a number of significant measures announced by Mr Haniyeh earlier this week. Speaking at a press conference at the interior ministry, the prime minister said that he was hoping to accelerate the reconciliation process with the rival faction.
