Miles of Smiles aid convoy arrives in Gaza

February 10, 2014 at 5:14 am

The latest Miles of Smiles aid convoy has arrived in the Gaza Strip after passing through the Rafah Border Crossing. The news was released by the Committee Against the Siege in Gaza, which is affiliated to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the 24th Miles of Smiles convoy to make the journey taking essential medical and other aid to the people of Palestine in the besieged territory, which has just been hit by a snowstorm after heavy rain and flooding.

Only seven people were allowed by the Egyptian authorities to accompany the goods entering Gaza. The rest of the delegation members were denied permission to cross through Rafah. An Italian delegation of 19 people left Gaza around the same time after a visit lasting just 4 days.

The Committee Against the Siege called on the Egyptian authorities to allow more aid convoys and delegations into Gaza. Not only do such visits provide much-needed relief and aid, it told the media, but also a morale boost to the population suffering under the siege.
