Coup prosecutions become farcical with Emir of Qatar on travel blacklist

February 11, 2014 at 2:03 pm

Not content with killing and arresting thousands of pro-democracy supporters in Egypt, the coup authorities have placed the Emir of Qatar and his mother on the travel blacklist to ensure that they are not allowed to enter the country.

In a new development which highlights the farcical nature of the current legal process post-coup, Attorney General Hisham Barakat has asked the central Cairo prosecutor to place Shaikh Tamim bin Hamad and his mother, Shaikha Mozah Al-Missned on the official blacklist of people banned from entering Egypt. Employees of Al-Jazeera satellite television are also on the banning application, which alleges that they all “incited the murderous crimes” witnessed in Egypt recently.

Apart from the Qatari ruler and his mother, the others who stand accused have been named as Ahmed Mansour, Ayman Gaballah, Abdel-Fattah Fayed, Ayman Azzam, Ahmed Taha, Zine El Abidine Tawfiq, Sarah Raafat and Shaima Awad.
