Forty Yemeni military staff were killed and 15 others wounded when militias affiliated to Al-Qaeda attacked a police station on Friday morning in the Governorate of Shabwa in the south of the country.
A Yemeni security source confirmed that the attack took place and described it as one of the “most violent” of all attacks on government facilities.
The source said that the military officers traded fire with the militias.
Observers said that Azzan City in the Governorate of Shabwa witnesses frequent clashes between the Yemeni army and Al-Qaeda militias that controlled the city until the summer of 2012.
