The United Nations Mideast envoy, Robert Serry, warned that if the ongoing civil war in Syria moved to the Golan Heights to involve Israel, this could jeopardize the 1974 cease-fire agreement between Syria and Israel.
The UN envoy’s warnings followed the UN peacekeeping mission’s reports of artillery shells falling in the occupied Golan Heights.
Serry added that during violent clashes on Thursday between the regime and the Free Syrian Army near the border with Israel a mortar shell fell on the Israeli side of the occupied territory. The envoy noted that Israel did not retaliate at the time.
