Egyptian court blocks extradition of Gaddafi cousin to Libya

February 15, 2014 at 1:25 pm

An Egyptian court has blocked moves by the authorities to extradite a cousin of Muammar Gaddafi to Libya. Ahmed Gaddaf Alddam is wanted by the government in Tripoli on financial corruption charges.

The head of the Administrative Judiciary’s Technical Office, Abdul Majeed El-Mokanan, explained to Reuters that the Cairo Administrative Court ruled that the new constitution provides protection for those who live in the country as long as they do not commit acts which disturb Egypt’s peace and security. He added that the court also relied in its judgement on the international conventions signed by Egypt, which protect foreigners, as well as the Qur’anic verse which compels protection for those who request it, Muslim or not.
