Egyptian Foreign Ministry summons Canadian Charge D'affairs in Cairo

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has said that on Monday it summoned the Canadian Charge D’affaires in Cairo in response to an official meeting that took place between Canadian Foreign Minister, John Baird, and a member of the Israeli government in East Jerusalem and in order to get clarification on why the meeting was held in the occupied capital of Palestine.

The ministry’s spokesman, Amr Roshdi, said that the Assistant Foreign Minister told the Canadian diplomat that Egypt was surprised by the meeting, and that it looked forward to getting clarification on it. He also addressed the implications of such a move noting that it makes Canada a partner in Israel’s violations of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people in Occupied Jerusalem.

He added that holding such a meeting is considered an implicit recognition of Israel’s illegal attempts to annex East Jerusalem and to have it considered a part of its capital.

Egypt said that this meeting also contributes to legalizing an illegal status according to all United Nations resolutions issued by the Security Council and the General Assembly as well as International Court of Justice decisions and all international laws and conventions related to the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
