Orthodox Christians gathered in Prophorius Church in the centre of Gaza City on Sunday to celebrate Easter. Prophorius Church is the oldest and most central for Orthodox Christians in the Gaza Strip. Church bells along the Strip rang as happy Christian worshippers attended prayers with their families.

Shadi Shaheen, a goldsmith, said that he feels that both Christians and Muslims celebrate the festival; gold sales in his shop increased in the preceding days.

According to Shaheen, most Christians in Gaza do not feel any discrimination from the Muslim majority. “We feel absolute tolerance from and with our Muslim neighbours,” he insisted.

Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh sent an official message of congratulations to Gaza’s Christian community.
