Dr. Nabil Shaath, a senior member of Fatah's Central Committee and Palestinian negotiator has confirmed reports that he has asked to step down as Commissioner for Mobilisation and Organisation in the southern provinces (Gaza Strip). In a statement to the local media, Dr. Shaath said that he had asked President Mahmoud Abbas to relieve him of his duties in the Gaza Strip, but "there was no decision taken regarding the request". He is expected to step down officially this week.
Shaath thanked God for some of the positive moves which have taken place recently, notably the Fatah anniversary event in Gaza, the updating of the electoral register and progress in the reconciliation process. Nevertheless, he told Alquds.com that the subject of his resignation has "been in my head for some time".
