Egypt's Prosecutor General and British officials discuss repatriation of stolen money

February 16, 2014 at 2:53 pm

Egypt’s Prosecutor General, Talaat Abdullah, yesterday met with a British delegation to discuss the return of money that was smuggled out of the country by the ousted president Hosni Mubarak, his wife Suzanne, their sons and a number of officials in the former regime.

The meeting was attended by Judge Hassan Yassin, head of technical affairs in the Prosecutor General’s office and Judge Kamel Samir Girgis, head of the International Cooperation Bureau.

Judge Hassan Yassin said the meeting focussed on ways to retrieve the money which the former regime smuggled to Britain. They also discussed the hand-over of several fugitives said to be in Britain. Their extradition, it is believed, would enable the Egyptian authorities to overcome the practical difficulties hindering the retrieval of the stolen money.
