Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, has affirmed that his country stands by the Palestinian people in their pursuit to “regain their legitimate rights, and the establishment of the independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with international legitimacy resolutions.”
This message was conveyed during a meeting on Monday February 13, at the Dhiyafa Palace between the UAE’s President, and Ismail Haniyeh, the Palestinian government’s leader in Gaza and the delegation accompanying him on a visit to Abu Dhabi as part of a tour to a number of countries in the region. The meeting was also attended by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.
According to official statements from the Emirates News Agency, Sheikh Khalifa reiterated the importance of unifying the Palestinian ranks to meet the challenges facing the Palestinian cause. Haniyeh also briefed the President on the latest developments within the Palestinian arena and efforts to achieve Palestinian national reconciliation aimed at restoring unity.
Taher El-Nono, the spokesman for the Palestinian government in Gaza, who accompanied Haniyeh on his tour, said that the Khalifa- Haniyeh meeting included “deep and constructive discussion about a number of important issues, particularly with regard to the future of the Palestinian issue, national reconciliation, ending the state of division and the Jerusalem and prisoner issue.”
