Farmers in the Gaza Strip have begun this year’s harvest of dates.

About 3,000 dunums (one dunum is equal 1,000 sq metres) are under date cultivation in the Strip. Although 8,000 tons are produced annually, it hardly suffices for local consumption. The date fruit is renowned for its nutritional value and health benefits. During the last Israeli war on Gaza many trees were destroyed, as well as large storage facilities.
