Grand Mufti advises Egyptians to support candidates who deserve the votes

The Grand Mufti of Egypt has stressed to voters the importance of voting for “the best, the fittest and the efficient” in the country’s first truly democratic elections for decades. Dr. Ali Jumaa said that it is important for all citizens to work together for the success of the election process as the first step towards political and economic stability and building state institutions in the new Egypt.

In a press release issued by Dar Al Iftaa on Sunday, the Mufti said, “Everyone, including government institutions, should play their role in the elections.” He called especially on the young people to take on their “historic role in making a better future for their country”.

The Mufti holds every citizen responsible for what he called “the historic responsibility” of choosing a parliament that will make a constitution for Egypt.” He noted the need to get out and vote, as voting is an opportunity to “testify”, and holding back with testimony is considered to be a sin.
Addressing the Egyptian people, Dr. Jumaa said, “Your votes are a trust, so give them to those who deserve them.” Acknowledging that electoral abuses do take place, the Mufti reminded Egyptian Muslims that such abuses are prohibited in Islam.

Dr Jumaa said that religious scholars “should be kept away from politics, in its narrow partisan sense, and the choice should be left to the people.” It is important for religious scholars to keep an equal distance from all parties, he added. “They should play their part by raising awareness and spreading guidance about correct electoral practices consistent with praiseworthy values.”
