The Islamic Resistance Movement has warned the Israeli government of possible repercussions from the occupation authority’s decision to close the Mughrabi Gate Bridge, an access route to Al Aqsa Mosque, prior to its demolition. Hamas considers the decision to be a “flagrant violation of the sanctity of the Noble Sanctuary and a provocation against the feelings of millions of Muslims.”
In a press release issued on Thursday, Hamas warned the government about targeting the historic bridge. “This is an integral part of the Aqsa Sanctuary and we hold Israel fully responsible for the repercussions of this criminal act,” said a Hamas spokesman.
The statement called for a general Palestinian-Arab-Muslim uprising to defend and support Al Aqsa: “In response to the rabid campaign waged by the Zionist Occupation, we call on Palestinians and the Arab and Muslim nation to rise up to defend Al Aqsa Mosque and other sacred sites which are threatened by the Israelis. We also call on the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to take immediate steps to prevent Israel from demolishing the Mughrabi Gate Bridge and stop its persistent crimes against the Holy City of Jerusalem.”
