The Palestinian Prime Minister in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, arrived in Cairo on Monday as part of a two-day official visit to Egypt and concluded his first Arab and international tour which also took him to Sudan, Turkey, and Tunisia. Haniyeh received a warm welcome by Egyptian crowds at the airport.

The head of the Cairo-based Palestinian Studies Centre, Ibrahim Al Darrawy, reported that on Tuesday, January 10, Haniyeh would be meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister, Kamal El Ganzouri, the Grand Imam of al-Azhar Mosque, the leaders of a number of political parties, and various writers and intellectuals.

Activists launched calls via the social networking website, facebook, to arrange a popular reception for Haniyeh at the Egyptian airport. Crowds welcoming him held up his picture and waved the Palestinian and Egyptian flags. He was also well-received by the country’s political leadership. Mr Haniyeh returned to Gaza late in Tuesday through the Rafah Crossing.
