Ihsanoglu appeals for urgent medical relief for Gaza

February 17, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has made an urgent appeal for all kinds of support and solidarity with the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.

He especially called for immediate medical aid to overcome the crisis caused by the ongoing Israeli aggression.

As a first step, Ihsanoglu ordered the OIC’s humanitarian department to coordinate a comprehensive program to face the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, at the top of which are medical needs.

He stressed that this brutal aggression on the enclave, which was preceded by an unjust blockade, is a flagrant crime against humanity that must be ended immediately.

Dr Ihsanoglu pointed out that health centers in the Strip face enormous difficulty keeping up with demands to provide medicine and medical supplies. Gaza’s health sector has been under acute strain for the past six years after the imposition of the Israeli blockade.

Meanwhile, the Council of Foreign Ministers of the member states of the OIC, currently meeting for its thirty-ninth session in Djibouti, strongly condemned the unjustified Israeli escalation against Gaza, which has already left 39 dead and over 320 wounded.
