Israel prepares diplomatic envoy to go to Turkey

February 17, 2014 at 11:14 pm

Media reports in Israel say that the government is planning to send a diplomatic envoy to Turkey.

Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper has named lawyer Joseph Levy-Safri as the proposed Chargé d’Affaires in the Israeli Embassy in Ankara. Mr Levy-Safri, 39, is known for his experience in conflict resolution and will be tasked to mend diplomatic relations between Israel and Turkey. Yedioth Ahronoth is optimistic that the appointment of Levy-Safri will help to restore links between the two countries.

Diplomatic representation at the Israeli Embassy in Ankara and the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv was downgraded after Israel’s attack on the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla in May 2010; nine Turkish civilians were killed by Israeli commandos in the attack, and scores more were wounded.
