Israel to release President of the Palestinian Legislative Council

February 17, 2014 at 11:18 pm

The Israeli court in Ofer has decided to release the President of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Aziz Dweik, next Thursday.

According to Baha’ Farah, the director of Mr Dweik’s office, the Israeli authorities informed his lawyer about the court’s decision not to extend his administrative detention order beyond Thursday. Dweik will have spent six months in detention without charge or trial.

His lawyer, Fadi El-Qawasmi, had submitted a petition to the Israeli court against extending the detention of his client due to the poor health of Dweik’s wife. She has been taken to Jordan for urgent medical treatment.

Mr Dweik was arrested by the Israelis on 19th January, at Jaba military checkpoint to the north-east of Jerusalem.
