A Christian church and cemetery were attacked by extremist Jews on Thursday night in Bar’am village in High Galilee, close to the Lebanese border, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported today. The extremists drew racist slogans and obscene drawings on the walls of the church. Most of the village’s residents were driven from their homes by Jewish militias in the ethnic cleansing of 1948.
According to the Israeli daily, a group of settlers swept into Ba’am last night and wrote racist threats of “revenge” along with the now familiar slogan, “Price Tag”. They also broke into the Christian cemetery and sprayed the Star of David on gravestones along with obscene drawings.
A member of Bar’am municipal council, Kamal Jacob, described the settlers’s actions as “criminal, reflecting their extremism”. He pointed out that such actions could not be ignored, and the authorities must expect “counter measures”.
Mr Jacob condemned the timing of the Jewish group’s vandalism, saying that it is extremely “provocative” during the Christmas period when many Christian families visit the village.
