The President of the Palestinian Authority has met with the head of Tunisia’s Al-Nahda movement. Mahmoud Abbas met Sheikh Rachid Al Ghannouchi at his home in Tunis last Friday.

According to official PA media reports, President Abbas congratulated Sheikh Ghannouchi on his party’s success in the constituent assembly election held recently. He also updated him on the latest developments on the Palestine front and the diplomatic efforts being exerted in the quest for full member status at the United Nations. The two went on to discuss the issue of negotiations with Israel, which are being held up due to the Israelis’ intransigence and insistence illegal settlement construction.

Abbas told Ghannouchi that Palestinian national reconciliation needs support from everyone in the nation, but that it is moving on track; he noted that he will meet the Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal later this month with the aim of pushing reconciliation forward.
