New Israeli detentions in the occupied West Bank

A further 12 Palestinians have been arrested by Israeli occupation forces in the latest military sweeps through several West Bank cities and refugee camps. Soldiers broke into homes and destroyed personal property during the searches.

Local sources in Jenin said that the Israelis detained Jaser Nazzal, aged 32, Farid Mahajneh, 27, and Solaiman al-Sayyed and his son Firas, 55 and 28 respectively. Some relatives of the detainees were interrogated and mistreated during the detention process.

In Hebron, more than 50 Israeli soldiers in a convoy of armoured vehicles entered Al-Aroub refugee camp to the north of the city. They arrested Hisham and Hassan al-Titi, Ali Abbas Jihad Adawi, Anas Kwamleh, Ali abu-Rayyeh and Bahaa Adawi. Twenty-one year old student Wasel al-Rajoub was also detained during an Israeli incursion into the village of Al-Koom near Hebron. Despite the very cold weather at the time, the young man was taken away wearing light clothing.

Activists in the West Bank complain that these detention campaigns against Palestinians in the occupied territories are carried out with Palestinian Authority consent under what is known as “security cooperation” between the PA and the Israelis. PA security officers are, allege local sources, withdrawn from the streets immediately prior to the Israeli incursions taking place.
