Saudi accuses Syria of procrastination over UN plan

February 17, 2014 at 11:17 pm

The Foreign Minister of Saudi Arabia has accused the Syrian regime of “manoeuvring and stalling” over the plan put forward by UN and Arab envoy Kofi Annan. Prince Saud Al-Faisal claimed that this is being done purely “to gain more time”.

Speaking at a joint press conference with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Jeddah during a conference on terrorism, Al-Faisal said, “The Syrian regime accepted every initiative but has never implemented any; this is a way to gain time, and it has done it again with the Annan plan.”

The Foreign Minister called on Mr. Annan to present “a clear, precise and transparent” report to the UN Security Council about the situation in Syria. That report, added Al-Faisal, will be submitted within weeks, after which the UN “should then make a decisive move”.
