Yesterday evening [03.03.2012], the Palestine Institute for Culture held an awards ceremony at the Red Coral Hotel in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, to recognise Palestinian cultural creativity. The ceremony was attended by a number of cultural, social and political figures alongside a host of representatives from the Arab and Lebanese media.

Professor Mohammed Salmawi, President of the Arab Writers and Scholars Union and honorary patron for the award announced the nominees for awards. During his address, Salmawi hailed the achievements and success of those nominated despite the difficulties faced by their people.

This was followed by an address by Dr Osama al-Ashqar, the Director-General of the Palestine Institute for Culture, who then presented each nominee along with their credentials and successes. All the participants were given honorary plaques before winners in the categories of poetry; short story; theatre; photography; cartoons and poster art were announced.

MEMO’s photographer, Mr Mohammad Assad Mohaisin, was awarded second prize in the photography category.
