Tunisian leaders condemn assassination of opposition figure

Following the assassination today, Wednesday, of the Tunisian opposition figure, Chokri Belaid, the country’s president, Dr Moncef Marzouki, has cancelled his visit to Egypt where he was due to attend the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

President Marzouki and Prime Minister, Hamadi Jebali, Secretary General of the ruling An Nahdah party, condemned the assassination of Belaid as a terrorist and criminal act, which targeted Tunisia as a whole.


In a statement to “Tataouine” public radio station, Mr Jebali urged Tunisians to avoid “falling into the trap of violence and counter-violence.”

Tunisian sources reported that Mr Belaid, who headed the Democratic Patriots party was shot early this morning while leaving his home in the capital, Tunis.
