The International Union of Muslim Scholars has expressed its appreciation of the Emir of Qatar’s visit to the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. Describing the visit as “a bold and historic move”, the Union called upon the other leaders of the Arab and Islamic world to follow the lead taken by Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani in breaking the illegal and immoral siege imposed on Gaza. A statement from the Union expressed regret at Egypt’s role in sustaining the siege under the ousted regime of Hosni Mubarak which resulted in many deaths and great hardship for the Palestinians.

The Union noted the previous efforts of the Emir to send fuel and gas in support of the people of Gaza throughout the siege. “Now it is time for the promises of material and financial aid to turn into reality,” said the Union. “The leaders of the Arab and Islamic world must all step forward to contribute towards the reconstruction of Gaza.”
