Waves of self-immolation threaten Israel

February 17, 2014 at 11:18 pm

An Israeli psychological health centre has warned of increasing rates of self-immolation by Israelis because of the “bad” economic situation.

A spokesman for the centre claimed that hundreds of calls have been received from Israelis who threaten to set themselves alight in protest at their poor economic situation and calling for improved social and economic justice in the country.

The suicide of Moshe Selman, who set himself on fire during a social protest in Tel Aviv last week, has prompted this increase.

More than 400 Israelis commit suicide every year. The prime reason is the economic situation.

Haaretz newspaper also reported that four Israelis threatened to burn themselves this week in protest at the worsening economic situation.
