Algerian opposition spokesman says Gaddafi's death is lesson to other tyrants

A founding member of Rashad, the Algerian opposition movement, has welcomed the news of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s death in Libya. Former diplomat Mohamed Larbi Zitout said that the day of the ex-Libyan leader’s killing was “one of Allah’s days, a day for enabling the oppressed people in Libya and the rest of the world”.

In a media interview, Zitout called on other Arab tyrants and authoritarian rulers to learn from what happened to Gaddafi. “This is a day not only for the Libyans but also for all Arabs and Muslims and those struggling for freedom around the world,” he said. “Every free person has to be pleased when such a criminal dies; he destroyed everything beautiful and good in his country.” The world, he added, has lost one of its worst tyrants.

“North Africa will be better off without Gaddafi,” said Mr Zitout. “This message should be taken on board by the other Arab leaders whose fate may be not dissimilar to Gaddafi’s because they are also criminals.” He mentioned particularly “the tyrants in Algeria” and the remnants of the old regimes in Tunisia and Egypt. “When the people decide to live, they can achieve almost anything.”
