Gaza’s fishermen have staged a sit-in demanding that the ban and naval blockade imposed on the sector be lifted. They also demanded international protection and an increase in the area in which they are allowed to fish. Currently Gaza’s fishermen are allowed to venture no further than 3 miles from shore which is not far enough to be able to catch certain types or a sufficient quantity of fish.

Fishermen who attempt to fish further out to sea than this are targeted by the Israeli navy on a daily basis injuring dozens and damaging their fishing boats.

The fishermen appealed for decisive international intervention pointing out that they were fired upon by Israeli vessel on a daily basis while some fishermen were periodically detained. The fishermen asserted that this was piracy and a dangerous violation of law while vehemently denouncing the international silence over these offences.
