Israel fears that US may not rush to use UN veto

February 20, 2014 at 3:31 pm

Israeli sources claim that the Netanyahu government is trying to suppress a draft UN Security Council resolution denouncing construction in Israel’s illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem. Israel fears that the Obama administration – which Benjamin Netanyahu humiliated by rebuffing requests for a freeze on settlement activity   will be in no hurry to exercise its veto against the resolution that is being prepared by Arab states and the Palestinian Authority. The sources added that Israel is making diplomatic efforts to stop the proposed resolution.

The Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz reported on 19 December that the Israeli government has serious concerns about such a resolution, which analysts believe could call for international sanctions against the Jewish settlements.
