Israel protests about tightened security measures on its border with Egypt

February 20, 2014 at 3:33 pm

The Israeli ambassador to Egypt has expressed his resentment after the Egyptian authorities tightened security measures at the Taba border crossing between the two countries. Ambassador Yitzhak Levanon filed an official complaint with Cairo’s Foreign Ministry after Egyptian border guards stationed at the border post carried out extensive security searches of Israeli diplomatic vehicles carrying kosher food for staff at Israel’s Embassy. This was contrary to the normal procedures adopted between Egypt and Israel for a number of years.

The revolution in Egypt revealed much popular criticism of diplomatic relations with Israel. This was evident from a series of protests that took place in front of the Israeli Embassy in Cairo calling for diplomatic relations with Israel to be severed, the embassy to be closed and the ambassador to be expelled from Egypt.
