Israeli report: the conditions of female migrant workers to Israel are "miserable"

February 20, 2014 at 3:32 pm

An Israeli organisation concerned with workers’ rights has stressed that the conditions and circumstances that female migrant workers live under in Tel Aviv are “miserable” and totally incompatible with UN Conventions on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women.

In a report released on Tuesday (08.03) marking International Women’s Day, the Hotline for Migrant Workers organisation stated that the conditions of migrant workers in Israel are dangerous and the circumstances of their employment are miserable. The report pointed out that migrant workers are paid wages that are classified as very low and suffer from harsh working conditions. Additionally, in some cases, migrant workers in Israel are exposed to sexual abuse.

The report stated that a lot of migrants in the Jewish state fall into serious debt due to the large sums that they are forced to pay to middlemen.
