Jerusalem Deputies honour House of Lords delegation

February 20, 2014 at 3:29 pm

On Sunday 11th July, Jerusalem’s deputies of the Palestinian legislature honoured members of Britain’s House of Lords who arrived as a delegation in Jerusalem on Friday to show solidarity with the humanitarian plight of their fellow parliamentarians. Deputy Muhammad Tawtah presented the delegation with a beautiful mother of pearl plaque depicting the Holy City.

Two of the Lords delegation – Lord Hylton and Baroness Tonge – held a press conference in front of the headquarters of the International Red Cross in Jerusalem in which they reiterated their complete solidarity with the deputies from the Palestinian legislature being threatened with deportation by the Israeli occupation authorities.

Baroness Jenny Tonge said that she would convey to the British government her impression of the suffering of the Palestinian people that she had witnessed, particularly that of the deputies. She indicated that her government had failed in the application of democracy in Palestine.

While Lord Hylton focussed on the humanitarian suffering of the deputies, he also expressed concern for their future should they be deported from their homes and families. He then addressed the negligent attitudes prevalent around the world with regard to what is happening in Jerusalem, including the general silence on the issue of Israel’s continued and serious efforts to annex the Holy City completely.

At the end of the conference, the delegation members expressed their deep gratitude to the Palestinian people and the deputies for their warm hospitality.
