OIC warns of complete collapse of Gaza health sector

February 20, 2014 at 3:33 pm

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (formerly the Organization of the Islamic Conference) has warned that the Gaza Strip is witnessing a health crisis which is “the worst of its kind”, and the besieged territory faces the complete collapse of the health sector.

In its monthly report on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the OIC said that the Strip’s hospitals and medical centres are suffering an acute shortage of medicines and medical supplies. Eye operations, paediatric surgery, cardiac procedures and tumour removals are all being delayed because of the shortages which are, claims the OIC, putting patients’ lives at risk.

The report urged the World Health Organization, the United Nations, and Arab and international humanitarian organisations to act urgently to provide Gaza with its medical needs.

The OIC added that the people of the Gaza Strip continue to face daily challenges with regard to fresh water due to the current high temperature and the continued deterioration of the electricity supply.
