Raids on Gaza "prove that Netanyahu wants to thwart Abbas visit to Gaza"

A leading member of Fatah’s Central Committee has claimed that the latest intense Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip “prove that Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is trying to thwart the visit of PA President Abbas to the besieged territory”. Mahmoud El Aloul condemned Israel’s war on Gaza, especially the targeting of civilians, children and the elderly, and attacks on schools and mosques. The timing of the escalation of attacks on Gaza, coming so soon after Abbas’s stated aim of visiting Gaza to create a national government in Palestine, is very suspect, he added.

“The destructive war machine used by the Israeli occupation government to attack civilian targets in the Shagaeya neighbourhood, east of Gaza, also demonstrates that Netanyahu wants to destroy the Palestinian cause,” he said. “The Israeli Prime Minister wants to kill-off any possibility of an independent Palestinian state with full sovereignty over all of the territories occupied by Israel since 1967.”

In a press release, Mr. El Aloul said that the Fatah movement realises that unity is a national goal, and any delay intended to reinforce divisions will eliminate the Palestinian national project. He noted that Hamas must realise that there is only one way for the Palestinian people to cause Israeli objectives to fail: one country, one army and one source of legitimacy.
