The head of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation's culture and media section has said that ending Israel's 44-year occupation of the Palestinian territories is the only way to guarantee the Zionists state's security. Speaking in the Unites States in response to Benjamin Netanyahu's "campaign to spread rumours which prove his rejection of a real political solution", Hanan Ashrawi said that the Israeli Prime Minister has no political platform, wants to undermine the peace process and "is trying to tout the occupation to the world".
Ms Ashrawi highlighted the importance of the Palestinian reconciliation agreement and its positive implications in the face of the current challenges. She also noted that terrorism was the forte of the Israeli military machine and the country's racist policies leading to daily violations against innocent Palestinian women and children.
In the absence of a peace partner, the PLO will head to the UN in September seeking UN membership for a state of Palestine and international recognition for the state along the borders of June 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.
