Syria foils Israeli scheme for Occupied Golan Heights

A Syrian media source has reported that Damascus recently foiled an Israeli attempt to include the Tel El Qhadi site, located in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, on UNESCO’s World Heritage List under the new name of Tal Dan.

The Syrian newspaper, Tishrin, reported on Monday, August 9, that during the World Heritage Committee meeting held in Brasilia and attended by representatives from 21 countries worldwide including a number of Arab and international delegations and experts, Syria succeeded in foiling an attempt by the Israeli delegation to include Tel El Qhadi in the World Heritage List under a new name.

According to the paper, the Israeli delegation’s ten members carried “forged maps and unrecognized documents.” The Syrian delegation reportedly challenged the validity of the committee’s functions related to registering archaeological and heritage sites in Occupied Territories.

The paper went on to report that “Syria has succeeded in postponing this issue as the [World Heritage] committee was not convinced with the documents presented by the Israeli delegation, given the fact that the site is located in an Occupied Territory.”
