Israeli gunboats, on Thursday 17 February, launched a violent attack on three fishermen on the beach of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip. There was a succession of artillery fire coming from the boats, causing the deaths of three young men, their bodies left with significant physical scars and damage.

Adham Abu Salmiya, the media coordinator of the medical service in the Gaza Strip said, the bodies arrived at the Kamal Adwan hospital in northern Gaza after being transported by ambulances to the Red Crescent. He also confirmed that no weapons were found near the bodies of the men. Those killed in the military attack have been named as Jihad Fathi Khalaf, 21, Ashraf Abdel-Latif Aktefan 29, and Tal’at Ar-Ruwagh 25 years, all of whom were fishermen, working to make a living and support their families.

Residents of Gaza have expressed their anger towards this latest unprovoked attack carried out by the Israeli occupation forces against ordinary civilians, who do not constitute any threat to Israel.

Palestinians fishermen are attacked by the Israeli navy on a regular basis, causing several deaths as well as severe damage to boats and essential fishing equipment. There are over 3,000 Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip, however they are under constant threat of being attacked and detained, leaving their families without the necessary financial and emotional support, as well as having adverse effects on the dwindling Gaza economy.
