UNWRA teachers stage general strike

UNWRA staff have organised a general strike; they have halted studies, closed all schools and gathered thousands of teachers outside the main headquarters in Gaza City in a teacher’s demonstration. The demonstrators sent a letter to the commissioner of agency headquarters which warns against UNWRA actions that violate the dignity of its staff.

The demonstration, which was the first of its kind in the history of the agency, was organised to coincide with World Teacher Day and in protest at the most recent UNWRA resolutions violating the rights of its employees.  It was also intended to protest the three month suspension of Union Head, Suhail al-Hindi.

The demonstration garnered significant media attention and coverage.
