Vegetable prices in the West Bank soar

A recent surge in the price of vegetables in the occupied West Bank this season is placing significant financial burden on citizens, particularly the poor and those from low income families.
 
Shortages in the availability of particular vegetables, such as tomatoes, have also compounded the situation with prices of vegetables tripling and even quadrupling what they were while the market was stable.
 
There have been several conflicting explanations for this steep inflation in prices. Some attribute it to a virus that hit this year’s agricultural crop ruining it; others attribute it primarily to the heat wave and atmospheric fluctuations while others yet link it with the buying power of the settlers, particularly during the Jewish festive season.

Whatever the root causes, there is widespread disapproval throughout the West Bank over this sudden rise in vegetable prices and some citizens, particularly farmers, have already lodged a formal complaint with the relevant government authorities. They are yet to receive a response.
