Yemeni officials trying to flee the country following president's departure

February 20, 2014 at 3:33 pm

Yemeni media outlets have reported that a number of officials in the regime are trying to flee the country following the departure of President Ali Abdallah Saleh. The reports say that he has gone to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, having been wounded in a raid against the presidential palace.

Those who are fleeing include senior officials responsible for crimes against protesters in the Freedom and Change Squares. They started their preparations when they heard the news of Saleh’s departure.

The sources noted that most officials and leading figures in the ruling regime see Saleh’s departure as an opportunity to flee the country, as they were prevented from doing so earlier. No information was given about whether any measures will be taken to ban those officials from travelling.
