Iran and Syria in harmony on Israeli nuclear capability

February 27, 2014 at 10:39 am

Talks between Iran and Syria have resolved to focus on Israel’s nuclear capabilities at next month’s UN meeting in New York which will review the Non-Proliferation Treaty. During a visit to Tehran, Syria’s Foreign Minister, Walid al-Moallem, met with Saeed Jalili, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. The official media in Damascus said that this was in the context of efforts to strengthen the existing relations between the two countries.

The discussion between Mr. Al-Moallem and Mr. Jalili focused on the need to “work collectively to make the Middle East a zone free of nuclear weapons.” At next month’s UN conference this will necessitate raising the issue of Israel’s nuclear weapons programme and the threat it poses.

Both men stressed their intention to develop further Syrian-Iranian relations to “achieve security and stability in the region” and made specific reference to the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and the escalation of Israeli policies against the Palestinian people.
