February 27, 2014 at 10:58 am

Munjid Bisharat, a 26 year old man from the village of Tumun north of Nablus works in the settlement of Kiryat Shimona in the North of Israel. After having worked in the settlement for more than 14 months as an operative in an iron factory, the last thing Munjid expected was to become the victim of a vicious assault; to be savagely beaten with sticks by three Israelis then burnt with scalding water necessitating his emergency transfer to Rafidiya government hospital in the west of Nablus to receive treatment.

A correspondent for Ma’an visited Munjid Bisharat in hospital where he explained that the attack had been carried out by three individuals wearing hats and driving a white Savanna styled vehicle. The attack was unprovoked and occurred as Munjid was walking along the main road near the settlement. He was beaten savagely with sticks all over his body.

Besharat added: I eventually lost consciousness due to the ferocity of the attack. When I finally come around, I realised that I had been moved and that I was in an unfamiliar place. Then they poured hot water from barrels on my body and face. The temperature of the water was extremely high and I fainted once again. I did not regain consciousness until the health centre in Tamara from where they transferred me to the Rambam hospital in Haifa. From there, I was again transferred to the Jamala checkpoint by the Israeli police.

Doctors at the Rafidiya government hospital said that Bisharat was suffering from second degree burns to his neck, chest, shoulders and back in addition to bruising all over his body. As such, he is in a bad psychological state and needs at least two weeks repose in hospital before he can be released to continue treatment at home.

Bisharat has refused to describe the individuals who assaulted him or to clarify whether they are settlers or soldiers from the Israeli army. In this regard Munjid he said: “I’m not really sure about that, all that I can say is that they were Jewish.”

Shaher Saad, Secretary General of the Palestinian trade unions, requested that Ma’an put together an inquiry commission made up of all international and humanitarian organisations because attacks on Palestinian workers have become flagrant and continuous. He also stressed that the trade unions had undertaken to formulate a committee to inquire into the circumstances of the attack.
