Saudi Arabia and UAE: The objective of Geneva II is to make a political transition without Al-Assad

March 8, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have welcomed the Syrian National Coalition’s decision, announced on Saturday, to participate in the Geneva II conference later this week.

The two countries stressed that the aim of the conference “is to put an end to the suffering of the Syrian people through effecting a genuine political transition in which President Al-Assad’s regime would have no role in the implementation of the Geneva I Declaration. The call of the UN Secretary General has reiterated the position of those countries backing the Syrian people as outlined by the London Declaration in 2013 and the Paris Declaration in 2014.”

The statement was made at end of Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal’s visit to the UAE on Sunday evening.

The Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported that the declaration is “in line with the firm position of the two sisterly states on supporting the rights of the Syrian people to defend themselves from the crimes of the Syrian regime.”

Since the conflict in Syria began, Saudi Arabia and the UAE have expressed strong support for the opposition fighting Al-Assad’s regime.

During his short visit, the Saudi minister met with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed to examine issues of mutual interest and the overall situation of the region.
