Syria's opposition forces on the ground announce their rejection of the Geneva peace talks

March 8, 2014 at 3:37 pm

A powerful alliance of Syria’s armed rebel groups announced on Sunday its rejection of the peace talks set to begin in Geneva, Switzerland on Wednesday, which means that any agreement that might be reached at the Geneva II conference would be difficult to implement on the ground.

Syria’s main political opposition group in exile, the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), agreed on Saturday to attend the talks.

However, the Islamic Front, a key alliance that comprises several Islamist groups that are actively fighting against the Syrian regime, has rejected the Geneva talks.

A leading member of the Islamic Front, Abu Omar, said on his twitter account that Syria’s future will be “formulated here on the ground of heroism, and signed with blood on the front lines, not in hollow conferences attended by those who don’t even represent themselves.”
