Egyptian authorities appeal for private donations to fund schools

March 10, 2014 at 4:27 pm

The Education Minister of the interim Egyptian government, Mahmoud Abu El-Nasr, has called upon Egyptians to donate money to his ministry in order to repair, equip and build new schools.

The move follows the ministry’s seizure of hundreds of Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated schools in Egypt earlier this month.

Abu El-Nasr argued that Egyptians should financially contribute to the maintenance of schools as they serve all Egyptian households and announced a bank account to receive private donations.

Speaking to Al-Ahram Gate, the state-run English language news website, Abu El-Nasr explained that the donated money would be spent on an initiative called “Renew your class” that includes repairing, equipping and building new schools.

He claimed that the campaign had already collected half a billion Egyptian pounds within the first week after it launched.
